The Times of the day
by Alphonse Mucha, 24.7.1860 - 14.7.1939

A Masterpiece of Art Nouveau. Up to date were so-called "Panneaus", a set of four paintings with the same theme. The Times of the day are dated 1899 and were printed on silk.

An extraordinary painter and artist. I really like these wonderful jigsaws and will solve some more of them. A summary and biography of A. Mucha is linked on the right side

"Ships anchored offshore" by Willem van de Velde, 1660

The original painting can be visited at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. It measures 56 x 64 cm and is painted in oil on canvas. The painting was donated to the city of Amsterdam by Adriaan van der Hoop in 1854 and is now lent to the museum. It may be that I saw it many years before while walking through.

Van de Velde the younger (1633-1707) was a famous dutch painter, also named "Raffaello of marine painting". He was talented enough to have a career before he moved to London in 1673. Afterwards he appointed by king Charles II. to work for his court since 1677. His art is perfectly composed and all riggings and vessels are reproduced correctly. His paintings are a guide to 17th century marine ships.

The jigsaw is made of wood of 3 mm thickness measuring 22 x 32 cm and includes 13 Whimsicals
