It is a very special jigsaw puzzle that should be cherished like an old wine - it needs time!

Development process of "Versailles Castle", 1500 pcs. - complete

Several years ago I found this on ebay and of course I had to bid on it. The pic is not one of the common views of the Versailles castle and it seems to be difficult, a challenge.

The picture shows the allegory of the french River Seine as an old bearded man with a laurel wreath, an urn with floating water and a putto. The sculpture was creatd by leHongre and casted in bronce late 17th century. It is one of 8 sculpture groups on the huge terrasse (french: le platerre d'eau) close to the two huge water bassins. They symbolize La Loire & le Loiret, Le Rhône & la Saône, La Seine & la Marne, La Garonne & la Dordogne

In 2007 I made a photography of the allegory of the River Rhone

the jigsaw puzzle is a F.X. Schmid made in 'Western-Germany', which means before 1989.

Hopefully it is complete...!

Yesterday I chose it and started separating the corner- and edgepieces from blue, brown and grey coloured pieces.

As soon as the frame and the blue pieces were assembled I realized that there must be a mistake.

I had two pieces left but they didn't fit. My husband and me tried to figure out what happened. We reassembled those nine pieces and then started to assort the pieces in the box to check out if they hide inside. And they really did:

those two pieces on the right side have to fit somewhere in the middle of the building. But they really look like they belong to those of the frame.

Next step: I started to turn all pieces downside up to build the castle

 Chenonceau Castle
 The estate of Chenonceau is first mentioned in writing in the 11th century^. The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built (1556-1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, and the gallery on the bridge (1570–1576) to designs by Jean Bullant.

When the château was built, Versailles was a country village; today, however, it is a wealthy suburb of Paris, some 20 kilometres southwest of the French capital. The court of Versailles was the center of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

The Oval Salon at Versailles

Material: plastic material, very small sized (approx. 1,7 x 2,5 cm)

in fact, this salon can be seen at Fontainebleau (not Versailles) and is also called "Salon Louis XIII."!

Once assembled, the four parts can be shown on display like a 'paravent'

 The reverse side is decorated with a floral ornament:

by the way: these are the almost true colours! It's a bit too green...

it was easy to assemble in the lower parts and a challenge in the upper parts, but at least, it was an interesting finger exercise :-D

The Fountain of Latona, Versailles, France

Latona (or: in greek Leto) was a goddess who fell in love with Zeus. She was pregnant, but Zeus' wife Hera was jealous. Leto gave birth to Apoll and Artemis and flew from Hera again. In Lydia the people banned her from drinking water. Zeus transformed them to frogs.

When Louis XIV was a child, he had to flew with his mother Anne d'Autriche and his younger brother Philippe from rebellions in Paris (the so-called Fronde). This fountain is a symbol for the fate.
