The Calumny of Apelles

Apelles was court painter of Macedon to the court of Philipp II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great. His paintings are all lost, but thanks to literats of the ancient times, the masterpieces have been described and preserved.

Apelles painted himself being maligned. On this detail you can see him being dragged over the floor by a young woman. She's the allegory of slander. The other women are allegories of rascality and betrayal.

King Midas with donkey-ears, affected by two women - they are allegories of arrogance and foolishness.

The man on the left who looks like a hermit is the hate.

On the left side of the painting are two women: the allegory of penitence on the right, dressed in black robes, and the incarnate naked truth.

Madonna del Magnificat (1481)

painted Tempera 118 x 119 cm, Uffici Museum, Florence, Italy

The work shows Virgin Mary crowned by two angels. She is writing the opening of the Magnificat  on the right-hand page of a book; on the left page is part of the Benedictus. In her left hand she holds a pomegranate, a symbol for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Therefore this is a perfect picture for today's Easter sunday!

The Birth of Venus
by Sandro Botticelli

painted in the late 15th century (1486) with tempera on canvas. It can now be seen in the Uffici Gallery at Florence, Italy. The painting shows the goddess of love arriving at the sea-shore in a shell, surrounded by the westwind Zephyr (left side) and a horae welcoming her.

The gesture of Venus is inspired by the sculpture of the Venus de Medici, which Sandro was able to study.
