Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955)

The painter was born to the french painter Suzanne Valadon. He adopted the name of his stepfather but was addicted to alcohol since his childhood. After rehab he started painting, guided by his mother.

His career is divided in various periods

  • impressionistic - 1900-1903 - mainly dark colours
  • "Montmagny" - 1904-1906 - colours lighten up
  • white - 1906-1914 - colours are mixed with sand and plaster
  • coloured - 1914- until his death he painted with colours of the whole range and kept his style until his death.

His main theme was the daily life at Montmartre, Paris

On this painting you see the church behind the "Place du Tertre" and a restaurant on the left side which is - today - the brasserie "La Bohème"
