 Polesden Lacey owes its current magnificent architecture and furnishings to a lady by the illustrious name of Margaret Greville, who was a highly respected hostess of major social events in her day. She entertained, so to speak, the crème de la crème.

Her father, William McEwan, a fairly wealthy Scottish brewer, purchased Polesden Lacey in 1906, and she expanded and remodeled it in the early 20th century. In 1923, she welcomed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the parents of Elizabeth II) on their honeymoon.

There had already been a country estate on the site as early as the 14th century, though it was significantly smaller. Starting in 1630, it changed hands more and more frequently, and the new owners occasionally made some alterations to the medieval structure.  

Then, as mentioned, the McEwan family purchased the estate and spent a considerable amount of money—and presumably enlisted the help of skilled craftsmen—to build and furnish this magnificent structure. When Margaret died in 1942, she bequeathed Polesden to the National Trust, the United Kingdom’s historic preservation organization. Since 1948, parts of it have been open to visitors, and it ranks among the most popular destinations—as evidenced by visitor numbers.
