The Bedford Hours "The Tower of Babel"
a medieval masterpiece by The Bedford Master, Paris (1423)
British Library

regarding Genesis, 11,1-9 mankind started to build a tower that should meet heaven. It was easy to start working because they communicated using only one language. God watched them building and decided that he must cut down their ambitions. He confused the languages and scattered men all over the globe. Therefore the tower left uncompleted.

The "Babelfish", known from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, is an invention of Douglas Adams to bring together the confused languages. "Babylon 5" is a spacestation where different aliens can meet. The babylonian confusion has so much influence on our everydays life although the story fills only 9 verses.

The Birth of Venus
by Sandro Botticelli

painted in the late 15th century (1486) with tempera on canvas. It can now be seen in the Uffici Gallery at Florence, Italy. The painting shows the goddess of love arriving at the sea-shore in a shell, surrounded by the westwind Zephyr (left side) and a horae welcoming her.
