Patrick Hughes: Moving Spaces
SEP 13, 2015 - NOV 15, 2015
"The
experience of seeing a Patrick Hughes sculptured painting in reality
is
really to experience unreality and the paradox of illusory space and
movement." (source)
This is exactly what I experienced today! In fact, photographies can't give you the thrill. You must see them, walk in front of them to see, what they do with your sight. In fact, I tried to catch various angles of view.
"Flat, Forced, Reverse Perspective", 2008
63 x 48 x 20 cm
The famous Brillo Box was created by Andy Warhol in 1960ies
"Horizon", 2000
46 x 97 x 15,5cm
the proof: it is three-dimensional and triangular and trapezoid
"Handy", 2012
45 x 108,5 x 18 cm
"Moving", 2012
45,5 x 90 x 17,5 cm
during my second visit I discovered this amazing detail:
I like this kind of optical illusion!
"Impossible", 2005
46 x 82,5 x 18,5 cm
"Fierce Library", 2012 - Painting
28,5 x 26,5 x 9,5 cm
Don't be sure about what you believe to see. Corners that seem to be behind, are edges in front of you!
71 x 188 x 20 cm
view from about 5 m distance
"Piles of books", 2014 - Painting
105,5 x 90,5 x 18 cm
detail
some front views:
"Cloudy", 2008
46,5 x 97 x 15 cm
"Venice", 2006 - Collage
42 x 88 x 18 cm
"Suitcases at the door", 2012 - Painting
48 x 131 x 20 cm
"Moving Bauhaus", 2014 - Painting
48 x 125 x 21 cm
okay, this looks like a carpet on the floor? And you look onto it? Really?
No! In fact this mazy ornamented carpet is painted on the ceiling and you look above.
"The Pleasure of Escher", 2014 - Painting (!)
48,5 x 126 x 20 cm
detail
"Retroperspective"
44 x 77 x 21 cm
"Pablo", 2013
53 x 112 x 20 cm
Several pieces of Art are marked as "Painting" - they are painted in oil directly on board.
The other artworks are painted, too. They are so-called "3D-Multiples". These are painted in oil on flat paper. Th finished paper is then reproduced digitally, hand-assembled on board and hand-finished. Mr. Hughes publishes four 'multiples' each year.
The Venice-pieces are 'collages', printed on archival paper. Details like water reflections and flat ends are painted by hand.
